Amazingly, I’ve seen some of this still available on some liquor store shelves. Driftwood used malt from Mike Doehnel’s Saanich farm in this recipe.
Clodhopper is a clear russet colour with a tight, off-white head that leaves a thin cap.
Rich, rich malt on the nose with an apple-peach fruitiness and the fruity, slightly spiced clove and bubblegum notes of a Belgian yeast strain.
In the mouth there’s a tangy, acidic, slightly raisiny fruitiness – this tanginess aided by the lively carbonation – above a deep, pleasantly sweet and earthy malt base. A subtle bitterness builds at back of the mouth, and the finish is very dry. It lacks a little depth in the centre, and isn’t the most complex example of the style.
It would still male for a great pairing with game and rich stews.
650ml, at very few private liquor stores
