Here’s the second late craft beer of the week: what may be my favourite beer by GIB yet.
No mean feat, as this is a rock-steady marriage of two flighty ingredients: namely, crazy Belgian yeast and loud, intense West Coast hops. On this form, brewer Vern Lambourne is the match-maker from heaven.
Not really sure how to weave in a boxing theme at this point — perhaps, “married life is like a boxing match, it starts out intense and exciting but by the end you’re just holding each other up…?” But before I get myself into any more trouble I’ll just go ahead and describe the beer.
One-Two Punch pours a clouded golden orange with gold highlights and a rich white head.
Spicy floral aromas hover over notes of orange peel and lime citrus, which is a big theme in the flavour too. The citrus profile is broad and complex, with lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit all getting play before a sturdy bitterness strikes. Underpinning everything is a sweet, gentle base of caramel malt. The body is big and rounded, with a delicious light chewiness. It all finishes with a moderate dryness and long, lingering expressions of those citrus notes.
It’s remarkably smooth and graceful for its strength: a one-two punch from a velvet glove.
