Another imperial witbier triumph from Lighthouse brewer Dean McLeod, this time with an added zing of ginger.
Although 3 Weeds doesn’t quite reach the dizzy heights of last year’s Belgian White for me, it’s still a great beer to sip from a white wine or tulip glass on one of these balmy evenings we’re having.
3 Weeds pours a cloudy, luminous yellow-orange with fizzy white head that has good retention.
The nose is built on a base of earthy spice, featuring coriander, clove and white pepper, with the addition of bready aromas and some orange peel on top.
Flavour is dominated by malt and fruit, with delicious honey, bread and orange notes giving the effect of marmalade on fresh sourdough. The ginger probably adds to that orange tang somewhat. There’s a pleasant herbal tinge to the beer too, along with a sublimely soft mouthfeel, no doubt due to the rolled oats in the grain mix. Finish is big and dry.
Pairing: Cheese, cheese, cheese. Aged cheddar, triple crème brie and gruyere for starters, with some fruity fixings such as grapes and quince and some thin-sliced sourdough toast. Hell yes. The spices here would probably lend themselves to lighter, fruitier Indian and Pakistani curries too.
