Persephone Goddess Golden Ale, Gibsons BC craft beerGot some hop lust this summer? How about trying something that doesn’t taste like sucking on a grapefruit or licking pine bark? Persephone has bucked the trend for West Coast varietals with its Goddess golden ale, which takes a more English approach to a refreshing, bitter brew.

Goddess is brilliantly clear golden amber in colour, with a bright white, frizzy rich head of the tiniest bubbles that laces lazily on the glass.

There’s a wonderful earthy depth to the aroma, with hay, lightly honeyed biscuit malt and a whiff of sulphur.

In the mouth, those lovely floral flavours are built on a bready, warm, biscuity, lightly honeyed malt base. It’s a little like wildflower honey on warm wholegrain bread. there’s an almost nutty biscuitiness in the finish that features a cleansing, judicious bitterness and some bitter grassy herbs.

A superb ale, and a refreshing change from all the citrus and pine.

Food pairing: Pork, sausages, cheddar, ploughman’s lunch, charcuterie and cheese plate

8/10
