This kölsch really impressed me when I had it at Steamworks’ Burnaby tasting room. Back then it was a tasting-room only deal, but thankfully Steamworks has worked it into their packaged lineup — and in 473-ml tall cans, no less.
It pours a dazzlingly clear straw colour, topped with bright white packed head that clears to a thick rim.
On the nose are grassy hay and lightly bitter herbs, whose bitterness is bolstered by just a hint of sulphur. It’s all underpinned by a grainy, lightly toasted biscuity maltiness.
Upon tasting, biscuit and grassy hay notes are up front, before a sumptuously juicy mouthfeel in the mid opens up lovely toasted grain notes. A light bitterness leads to a crisp, dry finish and gentle herbal notes in the aftertaste.
Food pairing: Salads, simple fish/seafood, mushrooms; omelettes, smoked salmon, bennies, croque monsieur
